The largest heliothermal lake in the world
Lake Ursu has an area of 40,000 square meters, a depth of 18 meters and an average salinity of 250 grams/liter.
The phenomenon of heliometry means that an insulating layer of fresh water is formed on the surface of the lake, which preserves the heat in the salt water and, in addition, prevents the radiation of heat into the atmosphere. This phenomenon was discovered around 1900. This brought him the first world record.
“This heliothermic phenomenon makes Ursu Lake the most important in Sovata, and not only in Sovata, but at the level of Europe and even the globe, it is a unique phenomenon. There are very few lakes that present this heliothermic phenomenon,
Lake Ursu being the one that has the most pronounced effect (…) Lake Ursu is the most important in the resort not only because it is the largest, both in terms of surface and depth, but it is also the most important because it presents the most pronounced heliothermic phenomenon.
The phenomenon of heliothermy has been researched, studied intensively by the specialized institutes in the country, an exponent that brings together all the research and gives the consent to be able to use or not to use a mineral deposit being the National Institute of Balneology, based in Bucharest”, said the director of SC Balneoclimaterica SA Sovata, Fulop Nagy Janos.
The only natural lake whose exact date of formation is known
It is the only natural lake whose exact date of formation is known. This earned him his second world record.
Lake Ursu was formed following the collapse of a salt mine on May 27, 1875.
“On that date, May 27, 1875, two salt keepers were collecting the hay, and at 11:00 a torrential rain came that took the hay and covered that hole, so perfectly that Bear Lake still exists. The long life of the lake is also due to the fact that we have two very very weak streams”, says Jozsa Andras, quoted by Agerpres.
The lake was formed on May 27, 1875, at 11 o’clock sharp.
After the formation of Ursu Lake in Sovata in 1875, word spread that its water had healing properties for rheumatic ailments, which led to the establishment of the first treatment base in the area, after more than fifty years.
Since 1928, the treatment base was built on the shore of Ursu Lake, being the first spa complex in this region.
Later, in 1933, the treatment base at Lacul Negru was built, and in 1973 the treatment base at Hotel Sovata was completed.
