It’s been 26 years since the last air-cooled Porsche 911 rolled off the production line, and enthusiasts are literally in love with 911s from this era and speak highly of them. Now the last copy that left the factory has been sold at auction, and the price is dizzying.
It is a 1998 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe, more precisely, this 993 rolled off the production line on March 27, 1998, just four days before the planned end of production of the air-cooled model.
Although it is not the last produced air-cooled Porsche, because that honor belongs to the Carrera 4S that was sold to Jerry Seinfeld, this model was still the last to leave the factory, he writes Klix.ba.
After it was produced, this Turbo was sent to Porsche’s exclusive Sonderwunsch department, where it underwent a six-month transformation involving numerous details. The car is even more desirable because of the rare WLS 2 upgrade, which increased the engine power to 450 hp.
The experts at Sonderwunsch covered the interior in Night blue leather, while the instrument panel is done in blue. The dashboard features an “In Memoriam Prof. Ferry Porsche” plaque that adds a touch of nostalgia, while the side sills proudly display the phrase “The Last Waltz.”
The car was delivered to the original owner on September 5, 1998, with a letter confirming that it was the last air-cooled 911 to leave the factory.
The car was sold at auction for $818,000, but it is far from the record sum. That record is held by the 993 Turbo Classic Series “Project Gold”, which was sold at a charity auction for $3,415,000.
