The latest Windows 11 24H2 update steals 8.63GB on your disk and doesn’t want to give it up

It is still true that one update means one step forward and two steps back. Microsoft will figure something out, Windows is a bit better and you get a few new bugs and headaches.

It’s such a fun tradition. Microsoft improves Windows to the point of exhaustion, but in the process of exhaustion, it also usually does something wrong. Last time, for example, we wrote about how an error in Windows Update allows an attacker to return the system to an older and less secure version. Well that’s amazing, Horst! And now, with the new update, there’s another weirdness that’s eating up disk space for users. Today it may not be that much, 8.63GB, but that does not justify theft. But wait, is that really the case?

During updates, Widle downloads something, installs who knows what, saves something somewhere, but most of the time you can get rid of the ballast using the “Disk Cleanup” tool. In this tool, you can throw overboard unnecessary files that have accumulated on the disk during use. And usually there is an item to get rid of the mess after the update. Well, now there will still be an option to delete 8.63GB files after the update, but it won’t work. So how is it?

Some users report this as a bug, while others claim that the files have to stay there because of how the update works. But then they shouldn’t show as possible to delete, right? Personally, I use “Disk Cleanup” quite often, and I would be quite annoyed if I saw 8.63GB there every time, which I can’t and won’t get rid of.
