Roma, racing with Ford, and his navigator, Alex Haro, completed the 120-kilometer speed in 2:06:34 hours, 18 seconds ahead of the second-placed Lucas Moraes and Armand Monleon, the Brazilian and Spanish Toyota couple. Roma – one of only three riders to have won the Dakar with both a motorcycle and a car – won a stage at the competition for the first time in the last nine years.
However, in terms of the final success, the focus was not on the performance of those finishing on the podium this time: the home favorite, who was at the top of the overall on Tuesday, al-Rajji sank in the sand at one point of the stage on Wednesday, lost a lot of time because of this, and reached the finish line almost 19 minutes behind compared to the winner.
Lategan only got 9:20 minutes from Roma, so he regained the lead in the overall and almost two and a half minutes ahead of al-Rajji. On Thursday, in the penultimate stage, the final success will be decided between the two of them, as the order cannot be significantly rearranged in the closing speed on Friday. Both Lategan and al-Rajji can triumph in the Dakar for the first time.
Among the bikers, Daniel Sanders, who is also driving to his first success, is doing very well. Her advantage in the overall standings is already 16 and a half minutes over Spain’s Tosha Schariena and more than 22 minutes over third-placed Adrien van Beveren. Wednesday’s stage was won by Michael Docherty from South Africa.
