After looking at the ranking of the best-selling cars in Italy in 2024, we were curious to find out which ones they are the least-selling models of the year in our country. To do this we started checking all the 2024 registration data provided by Unrae (National Union of Foreign Motor Vehicle Representatives) and found several interesting curiosities.
No small task, we assure you, to find the least-selling cars of 2024given that we have decided to exclude from the count the cars that have just arrived on the market, those not listed and the electric ones. From the ranking we have also removed limited production sports cars, supercars and hypercars and extra luxury cars which we find here in a separate ranking.
Here you will find the exclusion criteria which guided our choice in order to provide a complete picture of the rarest “normal” cars of 2024.

Off-the-charts rarities, including extra luxury and hypercars
Jaguar XF – 12
For years now, Italian motorists have not been too fond of classic medium and large sedans and this trend is confirmed with a ranking of the least sold cars which includes many of them in the ranking. The least sold of all is the Jaguar XF which in 2024 only reached quota 12 auto registered.

The British four-door, available with petrol and diesel engines and also with an 74.600 euro.
Volvo S90 – 16
Confirming the very low interest of Italians in classic sedans is the second place of the Volvo S90, which in its 2024 stock-out phase has barely registered 16 cars.

Now off the list, the Volvo produced in China had petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines with power up to 455 HP and a starting price of 57.900 euro.
KGM Rexton – 23
On the podium of the cars least liked by our drivers there is also room for an SUV like the KGM Rexton which is third in the “reverse” ranking limiting itself to 23 registrations in 2024.

Few were therefore attracted by this 4.85 meter long maxi SUV which, although perhaps not offering the charm of some premium German models, can put on the road a very comfortable 5 or 7 seater interior, 204 HP 2.2 turbodiesel engine, traction integral combined with true off-road qualities and a base price of 53.500 euro.
DR 7.0 – 25
Another SUV enters this unenviable list of the cars least bought by Italians and it is the DR 7.0, the largest of the cars sold by the Molise brand with strong ties to China. I am 25 cars registered in Italy.

The 4.70 meter long SUV is equipped with a 317 HP 1.5 plug-in hybrid engine, has front-wheel drive, automatic transmission and a list price of 41.900 euro.
Jaguar XE – 29
Jaguar XE, the not too popular sedan
The 4.69 meter long four-door sedan has petrol and diesel engines up to 250 HP and a base price of 56,800 euros.
Volvo S60 – 38
Shared with the other medium sedans in their destiny of “Italic oblivion” is the Volvo S60 which, now no longer available, has just stopped 38 auto registered last year.

The Swedish sedan assembled in the United States is 4.76 meters long and was sold with a 2.0 mild hybrid petrol engine with 197 HP and 250 HP and a 310 HP plug-in hybrid, at a starting price of 48.500 euro.
DS 9 – 38
It is also little considered in Italy DS 9, the French premium sedan that has never shone in terms of sales, but which in 2024 did not exceed 38 registrations annually.

The four-door DS which is produced in China and is running out of stock, has only the 250 HP or 360 HP 4×4 plug-in hybrid engine. Starting price of 69.000 euro.
Lexus ES – 40
The Lexus ES did not “break through” in Italy
We are talking about a premium front-wheel drive car almost 5 meters long which is equipped with a 218 HP 2.5 full hybrid engine and has a basic price list of 63.500 euro.
Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross – 45
Do you remember the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross? Perhaps few have answered yes to this question, given that only in 2024 45 motorists Italians decided to buy it.

We are talking about the Japanese compact SUV which, in addition to a length of 4.54 metres, boasts all-wheel drive, automatic transmission and the 188 HP 2.4 plug-in hybrid petrol engine. The starting price is 48.200 euro.
Sportequipe 5 – 65
Closing this special “overturned” ranking is the Sportequipe 5, the smallest of the Molise brand’s SUVs (4.30 metres) which found 65 customers in Italy last year.

The choice is between the 1.5 petrol version with 155 HP with CVT automatic transmission and that bifuel petrol/LPG with the same engine and gearbox, with a base price of 33.900 euro.
Off-the-charts rarities, including extra luxury and hypercars
Outside this ranking we can count some very rare and very expensive cars like the three Aston Martin Valkyrie, the two unspecified Bugattis, the three Ferrari Monza SPs and the single Pagani.

To these we can add a Rolls-Royce Phantom, nine McLaren 750S and twenty-two Dallara Stradales.
Which cars did we exclude from the Top 10 and why

Due to their prices and their exclusivity, some of these are often sold in a few units per year, especially in Italy. An example is the very rare Aston Martin DBR22 which sold only one example in Italy in 2024

Electric cars still represent a minority share of the Italian market (4.2%) and among the different models on sale there are some that still have very few registrations, such as the Subaru Solterra with 29 license plates in the year.

The exclusion made for electric cars applies even more to fuel cell cars, currently relegated to a marginal role due to the scarcity of hydrogen distributors. In 2024 the only one with a license plate in Italy is a Toyota Mirai.

Models that have a base price above 75,000 euros definitely fall into the luxury and extra luxury category which has very low sales in our country. Just think of the three Rolls-Royce Cullinans registered in 2024.

The cars arriving in dealerships in the last months of the year have forcedly reduced registration numbers and are not comparable to the models on sale from the beginning of 2024 or 2023.

Cars that have gone off the list or are running out of stock starting from the first months of the year usually record very low numbers among new registered cars.

Some Chinese brands on sale in Italy still suffer from a reduced distribution network and for this reason certain models achieve very low registration numbers. An example is the BAIC X55 which totals just 11 Italian license plates in 2024

Certain models with multi-space bodywork, often derived from vans and commercial vehicles, have very low sales numbers in Italy. One of these is the Peugeot Traveler which is satisfied with 16 registrations in the year just ended.
