The Liberals are now more clearly joining the debate on the citizens’ retirement age, which the Social Democrats have proposed to raise a little more slowly than previously agreed.
It happens during chairman Troels Lund Poulsen’s (V) speech at the national meeting in Herning, where the Liberal Party is gathered on Saturday.
“I cannot imagine Denmark spending billions of kroner to stop or reduce the increase in the retirement age, if it also means that we cannot invest in the security and safety of the Danes”.
“If we are faced with a choice between the security of the Danes and the retirement age of the Danes – then I will always choose the security of the Danes”, he says.
In his speech, he warns that Denmark must spend DKK 300 billion on security over a number of years in order to meet the defense alliance NATO’s strength goals, which come in 2025.
As a result, it may be necessary to choose what the money should be spent on. For example, defense or pension.
So far, Venstre has been reluctant to say what the party thinks about Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s (S) retirement announcement.
The party has instead proposed a working life commission.
The Prime Minister has opened the door for the automatically increasing retirement age to happen a little more slowly than previously agreed.
But the Liberals are against it.
“Because without Denmark’s freedom, everything else doesn’t matter”.
“We must be able to take care of the safety of the Danes. That is Venstre’s first priority – and everything else comes second,” says Troels Lund Poulsen.
