The long-awaited feature of Google Messages – – may arrive with revised settings

Due to data protection concerns, the company has so far held back the widespread introduction of Profiles.

In November 2023, Google officially announced the function called Profiles for the Messages application, with which it tried to facilitate the creation of new connections. Although the function has only been included in Google’s messaging application since then, all signs now indicate that the company may soon make Profiles widely available.

For this reason, the tech giant is now working on resolving data protection concerns related to Profile Discovery in order to avoid the resulting problems.

The beta version of Google Messages v20241010 now includes settings that allow users to control who can see their name and profile picture more precisely than before.

The three visibility settings are as follows:

  • People you message: people you message will be able to see our name and profile picture.
  • Only your contacts: only people in our phone’s contact list will be able to see our name and profile picture.
  • No one: we hide it from everyone, so no one will be able to see our profile data.

The new settings options will likely appear to users when they first sign in to Google Messages. It is worth keeping in mind that the function has not yet become widely available, but with the revised security settings, there is a good chance that it will soon receive the green light from Google.
