The long-developed “panoramic display” will be introduced in all BMW models

BMW has been talking about a dashboard revolution for a long time, which has been hinted at in the interiors of different models of the new Neue Klassen. The CES trade fair in Las Vegas had the first opportunity to get to know its operation. BMW emphasizes that the new Panoramic Vision is the result of a quarter of a century of continuous development.

The important thing is that BMW will continue to be a driver-oriented car. Therefore, the new generation of BMW iDrive has four elements that have been combined into a new kind of display and operating entity. The new element is BMW Panoramic Vision, which is a screen extending from the front pillar to the other with a black strip at the bottom of the windshield. It is complemented by the optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display. In principle, the central display is familiar, but it has been brought closer to the steering wheel in the best ergonomic place for the driver. The whole is completed by a new multifunction steering wheel. The functions are implemented in such a way that the driver does not have to take his eyes off the road.

There are still haptic controls for a large part of the car’s functions, such as windshield wipers, turn signals or sound volume. Many others, on the other hand, have been modified for use with touch/voice control or a steering wheel. BMW says it has developed functions 3 000 with the help of customers.

The new operating system X is BMW’s own work, although, like the previous version, it is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software. The upgrade possibilities are great, so the system will work far into the future, but on the other hand, it is also backward compatible.

The system constantly monitors the driver’s activity and develops accordingly. The goal is a unique user and driving experience. The whole also includes a sound world, which aims to create an emotional interaction between the driver and his BMW.

From the end of 2025, the new BMW Panoramic iDrive will be introduced in all BMW models, regardless of size or powertrain.
