The story of the LUCKIEST man in the world! He cheated death 7 times, divorced 6 times and won almost $1 million in LOTO. He fell by train, by plane, his car caught fire and he was about to fall into the abyss.
Frane Selak, a Croatian teacher of Croatian music, is what you might call a lucky guy. He cheated death seven times and won the lottery.
He survived some terrible accidents, and then he was rewarded with a fortune: almost a million dollars in the lottery. You could say he’s led a charmed life, but Selak doesn’t feel lucky.
“I never thought I was lucky to survive all the encounters with death. I always thought I was unlucky.”
The luckiest man in the world was close to death 7 times
- The born survivor had his first near-death experience in 1962. He was traveling on a train from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik when it derailed.
He plunged into a freezing cold river. Seventeen passengers drowned. Selak was not one of them. In a state of shock and suffering from hypothermia, he managed to reach the river bank with a broken arm.
- Just one year later, in 1963, Frane Selak would again escape death when his plane crashed. Nineteen other passengers died, but Selak survived.
He was thrown away from the crash when the plane’s door opened. He landed in a hay wagon.
- In 1966, he was again in mortal danger when a bus he was on skidded into a river.
Four people drowned, but Selak survived with minor cuts and bruises.
- In 1970, Selak’s car caught fire on the highway.
Just seconds before, he left the vehicle before the gas tank exploded.
- In 1973, his fifth accident would leave its mark.
A faulty fuel pump set her car on fire and she lost most of her hair.
- In 1995, he had another missed encounter with death.
A bus from Zagreb hit him, but he escaped relatively unscathed.
- He cheated death again the following year.
As he was driving in the mountains, at a bend he saw a UN truck coming towards him. He swerved to avoid it, jumping out of the car at the last minute as it plunged into the 90-metre chasm. He watched as it hit bottom and exploded in a ball of flames.
He won $1 million in the lottery, but shared all his wealth with his family and friends
After surviving seven disasters, you’d think Selak’s luck had run its course. He bought his first lottery ticket when he was 76 years old.
He won £600,000 (nearly a million dollars). He decided to give away almost all of his wealth to his family and friends, and then moved into an ordinary home in his hometown, according to The Telegraph.
However, the man decided to save some money for an operation, to support his 21-year-younger wife and to build a shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Selak says his health and that of his wife Katarina are all he needs to be happy.
But the Croatian didn’t just survive the seven near-fatal accidents. He also survived six marriages.
“I guess all previous marriages were also disasters,” said the Croatian, considered the luckiest man in the world.
Frane Selak died in 2016, at the age of 87, of natural causes.
