Tragic fate for a Romanian family

“There’s no water in the garage, dad, we’re going down to get the cars.” This was the beginning of the tragedy in which Gabi, Dana and their daughter, Alex, lost their lives, along with 5 other tenants of a block of flats on Mariano Brull Street in the Valencian neighborhood of La Torre.

The garage they went to became a death trap for the three Romanians in the form of a waterspout, which came out of nowhere on them, writes the Spanish newspaper ABC.

It was Tuesday afternoon, 8:36. That was the last time Gabi and Dana connected on WhatsApp, a friend told the ABC. The two went down to the garage with their daughter, Álex, and a neighbor who was calling his father. There they met four other people. They all died before any of them could get into the vehicles they had gone to to save themselves.

A flood nearly two meters high destroyed the garage door and killed the eight people inside. In the apartment where Gabi, Dana and Álex lived, the lights were still on and the table was set for dinner.

“The only thing missing were the keys and mobile phones,” the family’s relatives in Valencia told ABC.

The couple, two “close friends and hardworking people”, had arrived in La Torre over twenty-two years ago, coming from Romania. Their friends were, in fact, family. On that tragic Tuesday afternoon, when they stopped answering messages and phones in the middle of the storm, one of the friends decided to go to the building on Maestro Brull Street.

He had to put on rubber boots and walk parallel to the railway track. When he arrived, he found an unforgettable scene with “cars piled up” on the sidewalk of the building. Firefighters and police were already there. He managed to convince one of them to go up to the first floor, where the family lived. There, they discovered that no one was home. Just the table that was still waiting for them for dinner and a few lighted lamps.

The Spanish dream of Gabi, Dana and Alex, who three years ago had bought the house on the outskirts of Valencia with their hard-earned savings, was destroyed in that garage.

Four other neighbors died with their families on that fateful day. Among them, and an employee of the Local Police of Valencia.
