The Magic Eraser is now available to everyone in Painting. But it works exactly as you would expect

Painting, a simple and years-old program that has been a part of Windows since 1985, has undergone a number of significant changes in recent years. Microsoft gave it a more modern look, enriched it with the option of layers, and in the last update also added generative object deletion. However, so far only owners of Copilot+ computers have been able to try this gadget.

The quality of erasure is proportional to the complexity of the image

The function is hidden in the top bar under the eraser icon (shortcut E). After selecting it, a slider with a button to start deletion will appear in the left part of the program. Afterwards, just mark the object you want to delete from the image and let the program work.

However, the success of erasure largely depends on the complexity of the image or photo. Everything works relatively well on a simple background, but with textured or more complex scenes, the eraser often creates visible fragments. The problem also occurs with objects that overlap or intertwine with other parts of the image. An illustrative example can be my attempt to remove cubes from a shelf with a wooden texture.

Generative Eraser is available in Paint version 11.2410.39.0, which is part of Windows 11 24H2.
