The man loves brandy, and the machine that makes it

Srboljub Stamenković from the village of Dubnica, near Vranje, is known for his miniature “happy machine” that produces brandy and often attracts the attention of visitors at autumn village events. With their brandy, Serbs often tempt passers-by to stop, taste it and share their experiences of making brandy.

He has been doing this craft almost his whole life. Since he retired, he devoted almost all his free time to fruit growing. On half a hectare of land, he grows apples, including ajdared, red and golden delicious, as well as chačanka plum, which he uses to make brandy. The year behind him was dry, which favored his fruit. During the whole season, he watered the fruit trees with spring water that he brought back in 1989 from a nearby mountain. As he points out, he had a lot of difficulties during the installation of the hose, which was two kilometers long. However, despite that, Srba never regretted it, because that investment paid off over the years.

“Merry machine” for brandy has given its soul

In addition to spring water, he also has well water in his yard, as well as water from the city water supply, which makes it easier for him to keep his equipment in perfect condition during the brandy-making season. Because of his hard work, his brandy is highly appreciated among the people of Vranj, who often buy it for various occasions. When they see the recognizable wreath on the bottle, they know it’s real brandy, so they rarely haggle over the price.

Srba points out that the best brandy is the one that has 50 degrees of alcohol immediately after roasting, while cooling reduces its content, but remains very drinkable. In addition to fruit, brandy is also made from old grape varieties grown in the hundred-year-old family vineyard. He does not allow any of these varieties to fail him; when he notices that one of the varieties cannot cope with aging, he immediately places a sapling next to it in order to plant it again.

Stamenković emphasizes that old grape varieties are more resistant to diseases and do not require special protection treatments. This is precisely what enables him to produce wine and brandy of excellent quality. Enjoying his work and dedication to fruit growing, Srba is happy to share his experience and knowledge with others. At the same time, its brandy and fruit continue to attract the attention and enjoyment of the local community.
