The manager of the Compostela Hospitality Association, on the reduction of the alcohol rate: “It will affect us a lot”

This week, the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaskarevealed his intention to reduce the current blood alcohol level less than half. This intention has not gone down well with hoteliers and in Galicia they have exploded against the Government’s proposal.

Hoteliers say that this is an “excessive” measure and believe that the change will bring “pernicious consequences” for them. After what happened, ‘It’s all a lie’ has connected live with Ramón García, lawyer and manager of the Hospitality Association of Santiago de Compostelawho gives us the keys to everything.

Regarding whether you think that The measure may affect hoteliers, Ramón has been very clear: “I think so, because the consumption of alcohol, for example wine, is part of our culture. In areas of Galicia where there is a tremendous dispersion, in the villages you have to travel, you arrive from your workplace, have a drink after work, situations of that nature that should not cause any problem, because they will be affected and the establishments will lose people.”

The manager of the association explains that, although there is still no data, the regulations of recent times are “contrary to the sector” and reveals that hoteliers have a feeling of continued punishment of the sector.

“It is a delicate issue because no one is going to bet on the fact that it is possible to drive under the influence of any kind of substance, it is a matter of public interest. What is clear is that we cannot focus on the problem and be so blunt,” he explains.

And it continues defending the sector: ”The rate was lowered, it was considered a crime when it was proven that the effect on driving was effective. What happened to the studies? In an earlier era when it was 0.5 or 0.25, is everything that led to establishing that limit for the alcohol rate wrong? There is a lack of seriousness in the studies and in the approaches.”
