The most tragic episode of the terrorist attack by the radical Palestinian movement Hamas on Israel last October 7, in which a total of 1,200 people died, was the massacre at the Supernova music festival. The gunmen there killed at least 364 people and kidnapped another four dozen. The musical event, which took place in the Negev desert at Kibbutz Reim just a few kilometers from the Gaza Strip, was attacked by terrorists before 7 am, according to witnesses, not only on the ground, but also by motorized paragliders.
Armed attackers using motorcycles, trucks and motorized paragliders surrounded the festival site and started shooting mercilessly at its participants. They had few chances to hide in the desert, the attackers also targeted cars, which mostly young people used to try to get out of the range of the shooting. First reports said that 250 of the roughly 3,000 festival-goers were murdered, but later investigations put the number at 364.
The attackers also abducted some people to the Gaza Strip, the fate of Shani Louková probably attracted the most attention. A video of a half-naked young woman with twisted legs loaded onto the back of a pick-up truck went viral immediately after the terrorist attack. The hope that Louková had survived was definitively extinguished this May, when the Israeli army, during a night operation, found the bodies of three hostages abducted by Palestinian gunmen from a music festival, among which were the remains of Shani Louková.
The other four abductees – three men and one woman – who were freed by Israeli forces from the central part of the Gaza Strip in early June fared better. According to the army, the hostages were rescued during a difficult special operation in a densely populated urban environment. According to Hamas, the military operation in the Nusayrat refugee camp and the surrounding area has left more than 200 Palestinians dead, Israel admits about 100 dead. One member of the Israeli commando also died in the action.
