The Mazda MX-5, the most popular roadster in history, celebrates its 35th anniversary. The car was sold in over 1.2 million units.
The Mazda MX-5 celebrates 35 years since its launch. The 2024 Mazda MX-5 roadster created in Japan is now available at Mazda dealers across Europe. The iconic two-seater that brought the car format back to the public’s attention has received a number of updates for 2024.
Since its debut at the Chicago Auto Show in February 1989, the Mazda MX-5 has become synonymous with driving pleasure, embodying the spirit of light and fun-to-drive roadsters.
Over the years, the MX-5 has evolved while remaining true to its core philosophy. With over 1.25 million units sold, it holds the Guinness World Record title for best-selling two-seater sports car.
What changes did Mazda make for the famous roadster?
The Mazda MX-5 has always been about evolution, not revolution. This is very clear in the way the car has held up over these three and a half decades.
The basic philosophy remained the same: longitudinal engine, manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, retractable roof and as little mass as possible.
The fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 was launched in 2016, and a facelift followed in 2019. Now the MX-5 ND3, as enthusiasts have dubbed it, can also be bought in Europe, offering a range of small individual changes that make a big difference overall.
On the outside, the car benefits from new headlights with LED technology for all versions and slightly redesigned spoilers. In addition, customers can now choose a new body color called Aero Gray Metallic.
The MX-5 also received new safety systems. The latest model boasts an updated range of safety systems, including Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Emergency Brake Assist and a new Secondary Collision Mitigation System.
Last but not least, the car has an updated Mazda Connect infotainment system. It now features an 8.8-inch color touchscreen, wireless smartphone connectivity and improved reversing camera quality.
