The Hungarian men’s handball team won 32-23 as a guest of Finland in the second round of the European championship qualifying series in Vantaa on Sunday. Chema Rodriguez’s team did not play perfectly, but they controlled the match throughout.

On Wednesday, the Hungarians won 37-32 against Slovakia in Győr, and the Finns lost 29-28 in Montenegro. Mátyás Győri, Bence Bánhidi, Bence Krakovszki and Benedek Nagy were missing from the Hungarian squad this time.
Based on the first few minutes, there was a prospect of a tight first half, because the hosts led quick counterattacks from a solid defense, but they could only hold on for seven minutes (3-3). After that, the guests decided the match with a 10-0 run within nine minutes, it is no coincidence that in the 17th minute, the Swedish captain of the Finns, the three-time Olympic silver medalist, six-time World Championship medalist and four-time European champion, called a time-out for the second time. Ola Lindgren.
Thanks to the significant advantage, national team captain Chema Rodríguez was able to boldly make substitutions and give several young players a chance. This somewhat broke the team’s momentum, and the Finns took advantage of the mistakes to score again, despite being down 17-8 at the break.
The hosts scored five goals within four minutes at the beginning of the second half, and the score was only 17-13. Chema Rodríguez – not unusual for him – didn’t ask for time out, and his team got out of the ups and downs, although they didn’t play very well in the continuation, even though only Olympians were on the field at that time.
As against the Slovaks on Wednesday, this time there were mainly problems with the defense. Despite the new ups and downs, there was no threat to the confident victory, especially since the last four goals of the match were scored by the Hungarians – three of them by Miklós Rosta.
Rosta was the most successful player in the field with seven hits, Kristóf Palasics finished with three saves, and László Bartucz with six saves. On the other side, Gauti Hjálmarsson scored five goals, Joonas Klama scored 11, and Patrik Roslander saved one shot.
