The men’s t-shirt: from work underwear to timeless ready-to-wear piece

It takes its name from its characteristic shape. The word tee shirt comes from the T that it forms with its central part and its short sleeves. But before becoming the essential item in our wardrobes that we all know, the men’s t-shirt initially had a strictly utilitarian role.

An underwear adopted by the US Navy

The t-shirt is first worn under clothing, and in particular under work overalls, like men’s underwear. Made of cotton, it has the double advantage of absorbing sweat on the skin and being easy to wash.

If American workers already use it, it is by integrating the official uniform of the American Navy, US Navy, at the beginning of the 20th century, that the t-shirt truly establishes its popularity.

In the following decades, it gradually entered men’s wardrobes and became more than just underwear.

A garment adopted by pop culture and subcultures

In the middle of the 20th century, cinema shed light on this piece of fabric and helped make it an iconic piece that can now be worn outdoors. In a Tramway named DesireMarlon Brando wears it close to the body and gives it a glamorous and virile imprint. A few years later, he was associated with the rebellious image of James Dean in The fury of living.

In the second part of the 20th century, different successive subcultures took over this garment: from hippies in the 1960s, to hip hop dancers in the 1980s, including rock fans. Gradually, it becomes a flagship piece of all popular culture and gradually leaves its image of alternative clothing.

At the same time as it accompanies major societal changes and artistic developments, the classic plain white cotton t-shirt will give way to numerous aesthetic proposals, in terms of color and patterns.

A means of expression

With the arrival of prints, the t-shirt becomes a vector of expression and identification. It is a garment that we now seek to show to the world, far from its initial function as underwear.

Humorous or political messages, artistic or design drawings, faces of singers, movie stars… Everyone can display what they like, what they identify with and what they want to show about themselves.

It thus becomes a new advertising object for companies, organizations and franchises.

An iconic fashion piece

Nearly a hundred years after its arrival on the market as white and strictly utilitarian underwear, the t-shirt is now available in endless variations. In monochrome white, black, blue, red, pink… It can be changed according to desires and outfits. Its different cuts, materials and prints give the t-shirt the status of a fashion piece par excellence.

Both luxury and ready-to-wear clothing, it is marketed by haute couture houses as well as by mainstream brands like Celio.

Casual, chic, with a classic round neck or V-neck, in a classic straight cut, “slim” or “boxy” for a more modern look… Choose your Celi men’s t-shirto depending on your body shape, your tastes and the outfits you want to pair it with.

And if you are looking for more personalized and original t-shirts, you can wear pieces from la collaboration
between Celio and e-sports organization Karmine Corp. For a more offbeat style, choose a t-shirt with the image of pop culture figures like the Space Goofs.

Whatever your style and desires, you will find THE t-shirt made for you!
