The Mercedes-Benz S-Class will also be sold with thermal engines after 2030

Mercedes-Benz announces that it will keep the thermal engines for the S-Class even after 2030. In the future, there will also be an electric variant that will be sold in parallel.

The German manufacturer’s luxury sedan is due for an update in 2026. The S-Class facelift is already in the testing phase and will bring a number of aesthetic changes, but will keep the thermal engines. right Engine1the company “invested much more in updating the model with combustion engines than is normal for a facelift”.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius talked more about the “duality” of the S-Class. He also said that an all-electric version is to be launched, replacing the current EQS, which is intended to be a zero-emission alternative Class S emissions.

The model equipped with thermal engines will continue to be produced and will remain on a platform developed for cars with conventional engines. Despite the shared name, the electric variant will not be an equivalent, as it will use a dedicated platform, unlike the new BMW 7 Series, for example.

The CEO of Mercedes-Benz says that such a multi-energy platform is a compromise that the company is not willing to make. Kallenius called the S-Class “the most well-packaged car in the world” and that a platform that accommodated both combustion engines and hybrid powertrains would not lend itself to the German manufacturer’s range-topper.

He admitted it will be an expensive endeavor to have distinct S-Class models, but Mercedes will try to keep the extra investment “to a manageable level”. The company will do this by sharing as many components as possible between thermal and electric vehicles to limit development costs.

Taking into account that the current generation will receive a facelift in 2026, we will get to know the next generation of S-Class only at the beginning of the next decade.
