Domestic. The government’s investment in so-called voluntary return migration could be an expensive fiasco. Now the government is also opening up to the fact that the reform will be an unprofitable affair.

When the government wanted to increase re-migration, they buried the old theory of carrot and stick and, as usual, bet – when it comes to immigrants – on only one thing: Increased subsidies.

The government wants to spend SEK 2.5 billion over the next three years to pay SEK 350,000 per person who wants to return to their former homeland. A substantial increase from the 10,000 kroner that is paid out today. But it is uncertain whether the whole thing will be a positive business.

– Nobody knows. Those who say that it will not succeed cannot know, says Migration Minister Johan Forssell (M). The evening paper.

It is still unclear whether only grant recipients will receive money or whether everyone will receive it. Last year, only one person returned, with the help of the grant that exists today.

The government is far from certain that it will all be used by any significant number of people when the new rules come into effect.

– No, we try this model and then we evaluate it, says Forssell to Aftonbladet.
