The Minister of Defense named the year when the conscription of women into the Latvian army could begin

Minister of Defense Andris Spruds supports the mandatory conscription of women into the National Defense Service (SDS). This could potentially happen in 2028, the minister said in the Latvian television program “One on One”.

Andris Spruds emphasized that the issue of gender equality in the army is important and that this principle is observed in Sweden and Norway, and Denmark will soon join these countries.

Mandatory conscription of women into the CDF is supported not only by Sproods as a minister, but also by his Progressive party.

«But it’s clear that this won’t be done by tomorrow lunchtime. Need to do homework“, said the minister.

«A lot of homework is discussion and dialogue within the coalition, as well as in parliament and in society. It is very important that society supports this“,” Sprudes admitted, recalling that previously the majority of society also did not support the introduction of compulsory service. But the opinion changed over time.
