Roland Mikler paraded, the Hungarian defense worked well, but too many technical errors and too many exhibitions sealed our fate against Denmark. The men’s handball team played a good game, but suffered another defeat, which meant that, regardless of the other games of the day, we had to beat the defending champion and host French team in the last round for the quarterfinals.

South Paris Arena 6, v.: Garcia, Marin Lorente (Spaniards)

There were three changes in the Hungarian national team: instead of Kristóf Palasics, Imre Bence and Zoltán Szita, Roland Mikler, Egon Hanusz and Miklós Rosta joined the team. The Hungarian team entered the field with the knowledge that if they lose, they still have a chance to advance regardless of the other results of the game day, and their fate will be decided in the last match.
The last time the two teams met was in the quarter-finals of the World Championship in January last year, when the Danes, who won gold medals in the last three World Championships, won by a dominant score of 40-23. Ancsin scored a goal after a few seconds, but he was immediately sent off because he ran off the field through the middle circle, not allowing him to complete the quick start in the middle. Mikler then started with a nice save.

After a Hungarian turnover, at the end of a Danish rush at 2-2, the Hungarian national team captain indicated that the Danish player had stepped on the line, and then argued fiercely with the referee, which resulted in a Hungarian sending-off. Hanusz gave the ball away for the second time, and the Danes took the lead 4-2 with another quick goal. Then again, they failed to carry out an attack, and in the next opportunity, the cross was weak, while the Danes scored easy goals.

In ten minutes, the Hungarian team received three points, but Ancsin was able to be effective in the third. Mikler saved several shots, after the initial troubled game, the Hungarian team started to get together, they caught up from 4-8 to 7-8, which was followed by a Danish timeout. After Fazekas’ break, Bodó equalized in the 19th minute with a beautiful cross, and then took the lead shortly after with the same break. The Danes did not score a goal for seven minutes, Mikkel Hansen broke the ice from seven at 12-10.
The Danes caught up, the Hungarians ended the first half with a man deficit, Gidsel won a one-on-one duel for the third time and the Danes were already in the lead. In the last 15 seconds, after a timeout, the Hungarians were able to attack, but Ligetvári’s shot was saved by Landin, and in the last second, the Danes scored an empty net goal, so they went to the dressing room with a two-goal lead.

There were more errors on both sides early in the second period. On one occasion, Mikler saved with a feat, then the Hungarians played seven against five in the first man advantage, but they sold the ball, so the Danes scored an empty net goal. The two-goal difference remained in the first ten minutes, but later it increased. Mikkel Hansen pretty much only focused on the sevens, and he sold them, it didn’t matter to him whether Mikler or Bartucz was in goal.
A Hungarian timeout came at 18-22, but the situation did not change significantly. The Danes responded quickly to the Hungarian goals, sometimes they were able to shoot into an empty net, and they increased the advantage to five goals, even though Mikler paraded in the goal. For a long time, it was difficult for Hungarian goals to be scored, but at the start a better phase followed, and in the end the Danes won with three goals.
From the Hungarian team, Zoran Ilic was the most successful with five goals, while Mikler saved 14 shots. For the Danes, Mathias Gdsel found the net eight times, Landin saved 13 times. In the last round, the Hungarians must beat France if they want to reach the quarter-finals.
