The version of the classic villain from The Batman movie (2022) is playing in its own series from today.

Colin Farrell returns to play Oswald “Oz” Cobb, aka The Penguin, in the Max service original series The Penguin. Unfortunately, Robert Pattinson’s Batman doesn’t even appear in the series, although a cameo of the night knight was considered.

Batman’s absence has been explained by Lauren LeFranc, the screenwriter of The Penguin, as follows:

“I do understand why people want to see Batman in the series, or why they might imagine that it wouldn’t work without the character. In The Batman movies, the world is observed from top to bottom, through the eyes of the hero. However, in The Penguin series, we are in the underworld, the protagonist’s journey in the middle of all the ugliness and crime. He would like to go up, in the direction where Batman is.”

The first and possibly only season of The Penguin consists of eight episodes.

Colin Farrell left the filming of the Batman series with a tattoo on his forehead: “I don’t want to wear that v-tu suit ever again”

The opening episode, released today, was directed by Craig Zobel and written by Erika L. Johnson. The next episode will be in just over a week on Monday, September 30, and from then on, The Penguin will be followed by an episode per week on Mondays until November.
