The most beautiful resort on the Black Sea. It’s unique

One of the most beautiful resorts on the Romanian coast has not yet been discovered by most tourists. It is Gura Portiței, a fascinating place located near the Danube Delta.

To get here, however, the only means of transport is the boat, from Jurilovca or Lunca, and for the daredevils there is also the bicycle option, on the seashore, from the south, from Vadu, having the chance to see, in addition to the birds of the Delta, but also a stud of wild horses.

Gura Portiței is located on a narrow strip of sand, between the Black Sea and Golovița harbour, in the Danube Delta, being part of Jurilovca commune. When you look to the east, you see the Black Sea, and if you turn and look to the west, you can admire Lake Golovita and the flight of birds that live in the Danube Delta.

How to get to Gura Portiței

In addition, only here you can see the splendid sunrise from the Black Sea and a sun disappearing behind the reed stretches of the Delta, having the feeling that you can stand with one foot in the sea water and the other in the lake water. The reason is that the strip of sand that separates the sea water from the desalinated water of Lake Golovita is 40-60 meters wide.

Originally a fishing village and cherhana, Gura Portiței (Portița) is known today as one of the most secluded (and still relatively quiet) tourist destinations on the Romanian coast, an alternative to Vama Veche, which has become crowded in recent years. Access is usually by ferry, from Jurilovca, Tulcea, with special vehicles you can also reach the coastal road, either from Vadu, Constanța, via Periboina, or from Sfântu Gheorghe, Tulcea.

The name Gura Portiței denoted the originally existing communication between Golovița harbor and the Black Sea, which was closed in the 1970s, which turned Golovița into a closed lake, with water undergoing desalination and eutrophication. The lake communicates to the north (freely) with the Razim lake, and to the south with the Sinoe port, through a system of locks. The area is part of the “Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve”.
