Psychopathy has often been associated in popular culture with dangerous and violent male characters, but new research suggests that psychopathic traits may be more prevalent in women than previously thought. A study conducted by researchers from the University of Sao Paulo revealed a hallmark of psychopathy in women, pointing out that the manifestations of this disorder differ significantly between the sexes.
According to expert Dr. Clive Boddy, quoted by Daily Mailmale psychopaths tend to use physical violence, intimidation, and threats to assert their dominance.
On the other hand, psychopathic women more often resort to subtle manipulation, using seduction, relational aggression, and spreading rumors or lies to achieve their goals. These tactics are designed to give them an advantage in personal or professional relationships without resorting to direct violence.
Thus, the study suggests that psychopathy in women may be less visible at first glance, but just as harmful and effective in manipulating those around them.
Signs that a woman is a psychopath
According to research, there are seven key signs that can indicate psychopathy in women:
1. Verbal violence
2. Emotional aggression
3. Spreading lies or rumours
4. Cheating
5. Excessive flirting
6. Seduction
7. Handling
These traits are often more subtle than in men, and therefore studies of psychopaths have not been as developed to date.
The connection between make-up and psychopathy
The study of a sample of 1,410 women explored a potential link between personality traits and make-up habits, highlighting an interesting aspect related to psychopathy.
Participants completed questionnaires assessing the five classic personality traits — openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism — as well as the “Dark Triad,” which includes Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy.
The results of the study indicated that women with high psychopathic traits or other Dark Triad characteristics tend to use makeup in a strategic way. Specifically, make-up is used to manipulate the impressions of others and to gain social or professional advantage.
In this context, makeup becomes a tool through which women with psychopathic traits can control perceptions and social relationships.
Psychopaths, much more common than thought
Although psychopathy is often associated with men, it is estimated that the actual ratio of psychopathic men to women may be much lower than previously thought – about 1.2 men for every woman, suggesting that there are up to five times more psychopaths than previous studies indicated
