A large city landfill in Mladenovac has been burning since Friday evening, and the smoke is felt most in the surrounding villages of Dubona, Vlaška, Šepšin and Selo Mladenovac, writes Danas.

A major fire at the city’s Mladenovic landfill broke out on Friday evening, and the fire was most likely caused by self-immolation.

Members of the largest opposition group in the new convocation of the Mladenovac assembly, “Agreement for Mladenovac”, claim that the fire occurred because the landfill was not adequately maintained in recent years.

The landfill caught fire because it was poorly maintained. This is a large landfill, and such landfills must be filled with earth or sand. When a certain amount of garbage is disposed of, a layer of earth or sand should be spread over it, and then continue with the disposal of waste. This was not done, but a few years ago, garbage was just piled up. This led to the accumulation of methane and self-ignition occurred,” says Zoran Jocić, councilor of the GG “Agreement for Mladenovac”.

The editors of Danas invited the newly elected president of the municipality, Bogdan Vuksanović, who comes from the ranks of SNS, to ask him what is happening with the fire at the landfill.

“The fire is out, I’m currently in a meeting, so I’ll call you later to explain what’s going on,” said Vuksanović, who later did not answer the phone.

Zoran Jocić says that what the president of the municipality claims is not true, because there was only a temporary shutdown on Sunday evening.

“The landfill is on fire. I live in the village of Vlaška, where the first houses to the landfill are about 500 meters away. There was a temporary shutdown on Sunday, but the fire broke out again on Monday and is still burning. While I’m talking to you, I can see how people are smoking, and I can smell the stench,” says Jocić.

He also states that the biggest problem is that no one addressed the citizens, as well as the fact that the municipality, that is, the utility company does not have the mechanization capacity to repair this fire.

Fires at landfills in Serbia are not rare. They most often occur because waste is not adequately disposed of, which leads to the accumulation of methane, which leads to self-ignition.
