The new Audi A5 officially debuts and replaces the A4 in the Audi model range

The new generation Audi A5 was officially presented in two body formats. On this occasion, the German manufacturer is also launching the Audi S5 performance version.

With an ever-changing industry, the Audi range has to keep up. Thus, the A5 will continue to be a model offered with thermal engines, while the A4 will become a purely electric model in the future.

After 30 years of career in the Audi range, the A4 name disappears, at least for the time being, and the A5 takes its place in the German manufacturer’s range. The new generation Audi A5 replaces the Audi A4 in the German manufacturer’s range. Thus, the models with an odd number in the name keep the thermal engines, and the even numbers are reserved for the electric models.

A new chapter for mid-range models

The new Audi A5 will only be available as a sedan or station wagon. The design is clearly in the current theme of the German brand, with more rounded lines, narrow optical blocks and an emphasis on aerodynamics.

The new Audi A5 is bigger than the old generation, but not as “voluptuous” given the fact that it has to merge two models into one. The front is dominated by the distinctive, hexagonal-shaped grille, but which is now narrower and wider. The front bumper incorporates two large intakes, while in the rear we find real exhausts.

The headlights benefit from full LED technology, while the OLED taillights contribute to the modern look of the car. Also, these OLED taillights can send different messages to the drivers behind, messages to warn them about possible dangers on the road.

The interior received the latest technologies from Audi

The appearance of the cabin, like the interior, respects the new design line from Audi. Thus, technology reigns supreme, and the new A5 can be equipped with up to three screens, one of which is dedicated exclusively to the passenger.

The instrument panel is displayed on an 11.9-inch screen, while the main multimedia system uses a 14.5-inch display. Optionally, the cars can be equipped with a third screen for the passenger. It measures 10.9 inches and can be used by the passenger for entertainment. Additionally, for the first time on an Audi vehicle, there is a configurable head-up display that allows drivers to control vehicle functions and the infotainment system.

In addition to the latest technologies, passengers will also benefit from more space, given the fact that the car has increased in size. In terms of vehicle length, the sedan and station wagon are identical. With a total length of 4,829 millimeters, they have increased by 67 mm compared to their predecessors. The 2,900 mm wheelbase will create more room for passengers as well as luggage. The new A5 sedan offers 445 liters of total volume in the trunk, while the station wagon is marginally more spacious, with a volume of 476 liters.

On the list of options we will find a panoramic roof with dimming function or the Bang&Olufsen 3D audio system with acoustic enclosures integrated into the headrests of the front seats.

What engines are available on the new generation Audi A5?

Two of the engines that will be available on the new generation A5 benefit from a 48V mild-hybrid system, which almost behaves like a full-hybrid. The form of electrification chosen by Audi allows the cars to be driven purely electrically at low speeds, and the thermal engine can be turned off while driving at speeds of up to 130 km/h, which will increase efficiency.

Thus, the 2.0-liter diesel and 204, but also the 3.0-liter V6 engine, available on the S5, which develops 367 hp, will use the mild-hybrid system. It adds a 24 hp electric motor to the thermal motors, and the whole system is powered by a 1.8 kWh battery.

All engines will be mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission as standard. Also, apart from the basic engine, the other 2.0-liter engines will also be able to receive all-wheel drive. This is included as standard on the S5 equipped with the 3.0-liter V6 engine.

Audi also says that two PHEV powertrains, based on the 2.0-liter gasoline unit, are to be launched in the future. They will develop 300 HP or 367 HP and will be able to travel over 100 km in pure electric mode.

The new Audi A5, A5 Avant, S5 and S5 Avant can now be ordered in Germany. The launch on the European market will take place in November 2024, with prices starting at 45,200 euros.
