The new Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is the American hypercar we’ve been waiting for

Chevrolet has unveiled the new Corvette ZR1, the most powerful Corvette in history. The car uses a twin-turbo V8 with more than 1,000 hp and will go on sale in 2025.

Almost 20 years ago, when we said 1,000 hp we instantly thought of the Bugatti Veyron, a car that was and remains exclusive to this day. But things are changing, as these four-digit power figures are becoming more common on much cheaper cars compared to a hypercar from an established manufacturer.

After Dodge released the Demon 170, the ultimate incarnation of the Challenger, a car that developed 1,025 hp and was built specifically for straight-line racing, it was Chevrolet’s turn to flex its muscles.

The American manufacturer presented the most powerful Corvette in history. The new Corvette ZR1 is now a real competitor to established hypercars. The car uses a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 engine that shares a lot in common with the unit found in the Corvette Z06. However, the two turbines almost double the power, and the Corvette ZR1 develops 1,079 hp, which puts it in the territory of famous models such as the Ferrari SF90.

The new LT7, as this engine is called internally, produces 1,079 hp and 1,121 Nm, power that is transmitted exclusively to the rear axle. Furthermore, this power is achieved without any electrical assistance.

right Carscoops, Chevrolet didn’t just fit turbines to the Z06’s engine. The new LT7 engine uses new pistons and connecting rods, redesigned cylinder heads, and a new injection system. All these changes allowed the manufacturer to break the 1,000 HP barrier.

The dual-clutch automatic transmission has also been revised to handle the much higher power developed by the ZR1’s engine. Corvette Division Executive Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter said the ZR1 “pulls like a train.”

Even though they did not provide official values, company officials said that the car should comfortably reach 346 km/h, that it could even exceed this speed, since the production version will not have any kind of speed limiter.

The new Corvette ZR1 will go into production next year and will be built in Bowling Green, Kentucky. For now, Chevrolet has not announced the official prices for its new model.
