The new Hyundai loves to drift

Born in 2012 Rolling Lab division of Hyundai initially focused on creating a mid-engined supercar, which unfortunately never became a production car. Then many other prototypes arrived, all united by amazing performance. Today it’s the turn of the latest arrival. Is called Hyundai RN24 and, like all the models that preceded it, it is not a simple car.

Based on the same dual-motor mechanics as the Ioniq 5 N – yes, it is an electric concept – it does without many elements of the powerful battery-powered crossover, preferring a bespoke chassis derived from the world of the WRC. And despite the wheelbase being 34 shorter than that of the Ioniq 5, the N team (Hyundai’s sports division) managed to include the 84 kWh battery. Only after rearranging the arrangement of the cells.

All smoke?

Thus was born a decidedly radical electric, equipped with a safety cage without any panel to hide it, so as to reduce the superfluous as much as possible. Result? Despite the draconian diet, the Hyundai RN24 has an estimated weight of around 1,880 kg350 less than the Ioniq 5 N.

The sports crossover was not the only model “cannibalized” by the new Hyundai concept: i 19″ forged wheels in matt black they are those of the Elantra N, while the spoiler comes directly from the TCR cars.

The system Powertrain Drive Control Logic is that of the WRC, which allows the driver to use the buttons mounted on the steering wheel to regulate the power delivered by the electric motors, the electronic handbrake, the electronic torque control system and the special Rally mode derive from Hyundai i20 N Rally1. As regards the battery cooling system, however, we return to the Ioniq 5 N.

Lots of roast

The RN24 is designed to go sideways, as you see in the photos, but it is also very fast in a straight line. Less than 3.4″ is enough to reach 100 km/h from a standing start, while the maximum speed is 240 km/h. Fast and not (too) silent: thanks to two lateral speakers, which add to the pair of external speakers of the Ioniq 5 N, the Korean concept makes noise Naturally artificial.

As you can imagine, Hyundai certainly has no intention of making the RN24 a production car, but it says it’s not just a test vehicle. It is in fact a first test of what could be future electric sports cars, arriving in the next few years.
