Earthquake at CSM Slatina! No less than three coaches, the head coach and two assistant coaches, as well as two members of the administrative staff, the sports director and the team delegate, resigned, according to the club’s announcement of November 26, 2024.
The new mayor of Slatina supports, however, something else. Mario De Mezzo showed up at team training this morning and told the players that he got rid of him “the tyrannical methods of coach Oprescu”! The meeting was filmed and distributed on social networks, as has never happened in Slatina and perhaps nowhere in any other football team in Romania!

Head coach Daniel Oprescu, officially installed at the helm of the team from July 2022his “seconds”, Fane Șîră and Vasile Sin, but also team officials Cristian Scheau (sports director) and Zoltan Erdei (delegate) were fired from CSM Slatina by the new mayor of the municipality, Mario De Mezzo.
At least that’s what the mayor claims, because the club announced, on its Facebook page, about a resignation of the five.
In fact, Mario De Mezzo went to the team training today, led by Cristian Stănculeţu and Alin Răceanu, and announced the decisions he made.
The mayor revealed that there were players who complained about “tyrannical methods” of coach Oprescu.
“I have news, which I don’t know if you will consider good or bad. I consider it good. This morning we terminated the contracts of coach Oprescu, sports manager Șcheau and Zoltan Erdei. There were several of you who came to tell me about Mr. Oprescu’s tyrannical training methods, about the fact that the physical part was much too hard, and the technical part and the ball part were almost non-existent!”the mayor began his speech, in front of the players.
The mayor “sent home” Şcheau and Erdei, mocking the latter!
De Mezzo, PNL mayor, after Slatina was ruled by PSD for many years, also said that he sent Cristian Șcheau for a walk, because he was making arrangements under the table, and Zoltan Erdei, because he was not doing anything! Moreover, without naming him, he said about Daniel Oprescu that he was dictating the team.
“The arrangements under the table that Şcheau made are not the ones that will bring us the results we want! And poor Zoltan Erdei was innocent. He was just taking an honest penny, without doing anything, and that’s when we decided to send him home, so that he no longer sits on the money of the residents of the municipality of Slatina for nothing!
That’s why the lack of results in the last six stages, from my point of view, represents an accumulation of factors that kept gathering and which, at a certain point, erupted”said the mayor of Slatina.
- 13 out of 21 is the place occupied by CSM Slatina in League 2 after 14 stages, with 16 points accumulated in 13 matches. The team has not won in the last six stages, obtaining, in this period, two draws.
He says about Oprescu that he was a dictator at CSM Slatina!
The politician also spoke about two players, Cătălin Golofca and Cătălin Doman, whom he gave as an example. Meanwhile, Golofca also left signed with CSM Unirea Alba IuliaLeague 3 team.
“Among the players, in a team, in general, there are some who come for their experience, for their value, for their seniority in football. They stand out as leaders even at the moment when Golofca and Doman are marginalized, they are to be excluded, they are kept at bay, because that’s what a man wants, and at the moment when that man comes and makes threats: “You, you, you, whatever you would, don’t set foot on the field while I’m here», this is not a criterion, this is dictatorship. And we do not accept dictatorship anywhere. My objective is to perform well in sports as well”Mario De Mezzo also said.
- In the last period, after the game in stage 12, CSM Slatina parted with Cătălin Golofca (34 years old), the player saying that the break occurred at his willbecause he did not have the same vision as coach Daniel Oprescu. Golofca had played in all 12 games in the championship, as a starter.
- Another outraged player was Atanas Trică (20 years old), who after the game for the Romanian U20 national team against Portugal, in which he scored, he had an acid reply to Oprescuwho used a few minutes at CSM Slatina, each time on the final. “Of course the coach has his own philosophy and I have no place in his eyes”spoke Trica.
- As for Cătălin Doman (36 years old), he, the top scorer of the team and of League 2, until the weekend stage, was not in the squad in the last two games, also after the match in Miercurea Ciuc, after where the break of Golofca took place.
Political war in Olt, extended to the football team!
The liberal Mario De Mezzo was elected mayor of Slatina, a city that until now was the fiefdom of PSD’s general secretary, Paul Stănescu.
De Mezzo (PNL) won elections this summer with 48.97% of the vote and has been in office since September. The PSD candidate, Constantin Moț, obtained only 38.45%.
Instead, the Olt County Council is still led by Marius Oprescu (PSD), even the brother of the coach Daniel Oprescu, about whom bad mouths say that, thus, he had his “back” secured and did everything he wanted at CSM Slatina . Hence the local war that reached football!
After the installation of the new De Mezzo in Slatina, CSM Slatina, a club belonging to the town hall, decided to change its equipment and logo to blue-white, after it was red-white until then.
Since the end of September, CSM Slatina has a new director, in the person of Octavian Smărandescu.
