Production began this week at the Oxford plant for the Mini Cooper Cabriolet for the first time since 2015. The model joins the Mini Cooper 3-door and Mini Cooper 5-door, making the Oxford plant the home of the Cooper family.
Announced last month, the fourth-generation Mini Cooper Cabriolet includes a completely new interior and exterior design, as well as a modern digital experience. “We are delighted to start production of the Mini Cabriolet, which is now being produced again at the Oxford plant, the home of Mini. Unique in its class, the Mini Cabriolet offers unrivaled driving pleasure, typical of the brand, combined with boundless freedom and great emotions: the iconic design combined with modern technology and connectivity make this car an unparalleled convertible experience for our customers.” says Stefan Richmann, director of Mini.
The Mini Cooper Cabriolet is also available in Romania. Prices start from 32,000 euros
Three BMW Group UK production sites contribute to the Mini Cooper Cabriolet. The BMW Group plant in Swindon produces the body pressing and subassemblies, while the latest four-cylinder petrol engines are built at the BMW Group plant in Hams Hall, North Warwickshire. Finally, these parts come together at the Mini plant in Oxford, where bodywork, painting and final assembly take place.
With 160,000 cars built at the Mini Oxford plant from 2004 to 2008, the first generation MINI Cabriolet was known for its retro styling and iconic chrome protective consoles behind the rear seats. The second generation, revealed in 2009 and produced in 165,000 units at Mini’s Oxford plant until 2015, retained the downward-opening tailgate but gained the evolved Cooper styling of that era.
Production of the model was briefly moved to VDL Nedcar for the third generation, making way for the Mini Clubman at the Mini plant in Oxford. More than 150,000 convertible models were produced at Nedcar until production stops in 2023, before production returns to the Mini plant in Oxford.
The new Mini Cooper Cabriolet is available for orders in Romania with a starting price of 32,189 euros including VAT for the Cooper Cabriolet C version, equipped with a 2.0 liter engine, 163 HP and automatic gearbox.
