The new season begins in Hungary, at the start MTK hosts Zalaegersega

THIS Friday, the new Hungarian football championship begins, and the season is opened by players from Zalaegerszeg and MTK.

The title is defended by Fernecvaroš, the city rival of MTK, which has not been waiting for a championship title since 2008. Zalaegeršeg was champion only once, in 2002.

Both teams finished last season in the lower part of the table with 43 and 44 points respectively, quite safe from relegation, but very far from the places that led to Europe.

It seems that the ambitions of these two teams in the new season are not much bigger, since neither of them did much business on the market. They brought in several reinforcements, but they didn’t spend money on any of them because they are all free players or returning from loans.

MTK admittedly brought forward Robert Polijevka, who last season with 13 goals helped Dukla from Banska Bistrica to maintain the status of the Czech first league.

On the other hand, Zalaegeršeg sold Antonio Mance, the league’s second top scorer last season, to Qatar’s Um Salal.

These two teams played three games last season, all three with different results. A 2:1 victory for ZTE, a 2:0 victory for MTK and a 2:2 draw in the third match.
