The new smallest airport in Poland. Anyone flying there?

For a long time, the Zielona Góra-Babimost airport was considered the smallest airport in Poland. The Lubusz airport serves regular connections with Warsaw (PLL LOT) and seasonal charter flights, including: to Turkey. Several thousand passengers a month meant that this place was at the bottom of the ranking of Polish airports. Now there has been a major reshuffle.

It turned out that in recent months it was not Zielona Góra, but Olsztyn that held the status of the smallest airport in Poland. As we read in the reports, August and September were closed there with only 13,000 checked-in passengers – pasazer.com portal states that this a decrease of as much as 60%.

A glance at the statistics ends big surprise. This year has accustomed us to significant increases at Polish airports. The records recorded in the corresponding months of last year are regularly exceeded, and Poznań, Warsaw and Kraków (and not only them) are getting ready to set new best results. It is different in Olsztyn.

Already in February this year, Olsztyn-Szymany Airport achieved worse results than in the previous period, and a real decline occurred in April – in the fourth month of this year, 4,200 people were served there, while last year there were as many as 11,600. What is the reason for such deterioration of the airport?

The main and obvious reason for the lower interest in flights is: decisions of Ryanair and Wizz Air airlines. Two budget carriers have made several cuts this season, which have had a significant impact on the smaller number of passengers flying from Olsztyn. The Irish carrier did not resume the route to Krakow and Dortmund, and Wizz Air completely abandoned the airport in Szymany – due to engine problems. Flights to London Luton thus disappeared.

Currently, only two scheduled connections are offered from the airport. PLL LOT takes passengers to Krakow, and Ryanair to London-Stansted. In addition, periodic charter flights are also available. Interestingly, even holiday carriers had to make some cuts. There was talk about organizing it for some time flights to Kenyaone of these ideas was ultimately abandoned.
