The new sound signal in the Volvo EX90 will warn you if you look at the road ahead for too long

Modern cars send beeps for almost everything that happens on the road. Volvo, which has long been an innovator in audio signal technology, has a new audible notification. The Volvo EX90 will also give an audible signal if you are constantly looking at the road ahead!

You read that right. And no, it’s not stupid. Like many of the beeps, it’s actually quite clever as the new EX90 has the latest generation of safety technology which includes driver monitoring, it says HAK magazine.

Volvo EX90

– We did a lot of research. So if about 80% of your focus is on the road, that’s normal – Elsa Eugensson, Volvo’s senior manager for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) told InsideEV.

– If you are below 60%, then you are probably distracted and spend too little time looking at the road. If you’re more than 90% focused on the road, then you’re already staring, which could mean you’re cognitively distracted. Maybe you are thinking about something else, about something that is happening in your life.

That already makes sense. Most people’s eyes wander a little while driving. When you look straight ahead without moving your eyes, this is usually not a sign that you are focused on traffic. Eugensson says that when the car detects that you are focused on times less than 60% or more than 90% of the time, it will trigger an alert. The first sound will be light, and the car will amplify it if you don’t respond.
