On September 9, perhaps the most important annual event was completed event Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” event, where the Cupertino tech giant introduced the new Series 10 watches and added a new color option for the Watch Ultra 2. The disappointing event was that there was no Ultra 3 and no new Watch SE model. A third version of the Apple Watch SE is definitely in the works, writes its Mark Gurman Bloomberg.
The third Apple Watch SE will likely arrive in 2025, according to Gurmanthe Apple team has been busy converting the design from the original aluminum to plastic. Using plastic will allow Apple to lower the price and introduce new, bolder colors.
Cheap, pretty cheap we’d say it already is the Watch SE (2022) starting at $250 for a 40mm model and $280 for the 44mm variant; even upgrading to the cellular version is pretty cheap at just $50 more than the GPS model. However, one competitor, the Samsung Galaxy Watch FE, costs $200, so Apple thinks another price drop could be in order.
As for the new colors, remember the iPhone 5c? This was plastic and Apple had added many colors to it. Kids might like the new colors and parents the new prices. As Gurman points out, more and more countries are considering or already ban smartphones in schools, so the Watch SE could be a way to stay connected without a phone. Apple even offers a way to set up a watch for your child even if they don’t have their own iPhone (you’re using yours instead).
Anyway, Gurman also mentions that the new SE could get a chipset upgrade. The Watch SE (2022) uses the Apple S8 chipset, the same as the Series 8 watches released in 2022. However, the underlying hardware isn’t all that different from the S6 2020. Apple has been pretty vague about the upgrades to the new Apple S10 chipset, which focuses on the artificial intelligence of things. Whether the new SE version has an S9 or S10 chip may depend on supply and pricing.
