The next Huawei HarmonyOS release date has been announced

Many of us know that Huawei’s HarmonyOS Next has been in development for a few years now, but the commercially ready version is finally getting a release date – October 22, 2024 which is also the rumored release date for the Nova 13 series.

Essentially HarmonyOS Next is a monumental step for Huawei’s software ambitions, as it will abandon the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and support for Android apps instead of its own internal code and apps. The developer edition was released last summer and Huawei’s software department has been busy developing an ecosystem of apps and services to welcome users. Based on the latest reports, HarmonyOS Next has more than 10,000 apps and services.

As a first observation we have to make is that HarmonyOS Next visually is identical to the current HarmonyOS but without the ability to run Android code and applications. HarmonyOS Next uses a self-developed microkernel operating system based on the open source OpenHarmony kernel.

The new OS supports applications through the Ark Compiler with Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and promises a seamless unified architecture between HarmonyOS Next devices and the cloud, as well as interfacing across various device form factors.
