The next iPad Air, iMac and Studio Display could have a screen that would “almost” be ProMotion

This will be one of the great novelties of 2025 on the iPad Air, iMac and Studio Display devices

The iPad Air is Apple’s lightest designed tablet

Apple has renewed its entire fleet of tablets – practically completely – throughout this year 2024. It has done so in installments, first presenting two models of iPad Air with M2 chip along with two versions of the iPad Pro with OLED screen and processors Apple Silicon M4. Later, they recently launched a 7th generation iPad mini and are expected to announce a new line of their original iPad next year.

While the 2024 iPad Pro series has incorporated a spectacular display with tandem OLED technology, the rest of the tablet models maintain an LCD screen with hardly any improvements. The iPad Pro offers ProMotion technology with a variable refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, currently tablet screens such as the 6th generation iPad Air still have a refresh rate of 60 Hz. But that could soon change.

a new rumor from the Upgrade technology podcast suggests that Apple is planning increase the hertz of the screens of its next generations of iPad Air, iMac and Studio Display.

Apple is working on developing 90 Hz LCD screens

Myke Hurley y Jason Snellstars of the Upgrade podcast, spoke with an anonymous source who claims that Apple is developing LCD screens with a higher refresh rate. This technology would be close to ProMotion technology and would have a refresh rate of around 90 Hz.

The first tablet that would enjoy this refresh rate would be the iPad Air 7th generation with M3 chip. But later it would expand to other products such as 24-inch iMac and the next generation of Studio Displayalthough in the latter case it is said that it could have mini-LED technology. All these products would arrive in 2025.

I have news about screen improvements for the new generation of iPad Air M3. Apple is working on an LCD display with a higher refresh rate and a new liquid crystal panel around 90 Hz. They are also working on expanding it to other models or products such as a 24-inch iMac and a next-generation Studio Display.

Another of the great developments of 2025 in relation to this topic will reach the line of iPhone 17. According to the latest rumors, all iPhone 17 models would have ProMotion technology and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. But nothing is confirmed yet.

Currently, Apple markets its iPad, iPad Air, iPad mini, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus products with a screen that does not reach 120 Hz. This, in our view, is unacceptable. They are products with a very high value in the market and, yes, obviously you need to differentiate them from other more advanced products. But there are already many other exclusive hardware and software features for that. If this increases its manufacturing cost, its price increases.

It is simply incomprehensible that a product worth thousands of euros, in the year 2024, still does not have a 120 Hz refresh rate. Luckily, this is about to change. Point for Apple.
