The night’s cloudburst and thunder will affect Wednesday’s weather

Sunshine Island Bornholm lives up to its name on Wednesday. Almost the entire country has been affected by cloudbursts and thunder – but the rocky island has been spared.

This is according to meteorologist on duty at the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) Trine Pedersen.

As it appears on Wednesday morning, the overnight storm is not yet over.

– We have to fight with this weather today, she says.

During the night to Wednesday, cloudbursts were recorded in several places in the country, including in central Jutland, where a cloudburst of 24.2 millimeters of rain was recorded on Tuesday evening.

– It is very local where these cloudbursts have come. But there are clouds over the whole country this morning, says the meteorologist.

Both Skanderborg and Viborg were right in the middle of a strong squall line that drifted from south to north overnight.

Thunder and rain showers have also swept over Zealand, which has been right on the verge of cloudburst. According to DMI, it is a cloudburst when it falls more than 15 millimeters in half an hour.

– It seems that Zealand is not finished with these thunder and rain showers, says Trine Pedersen.

The large amounts of rain have also caused the police to call for caution when moving out into traffic on Wednesday morning. This is what the Central and West Zealand Police write on the social media X.

The weather has already left its mark on the traffic. Communications consultant at the police Maria Sander Hansen tells Ritzau that there was a solo accident on the Holbæk motorway on Wednesday morning.

First, a car crashed, and then there were four subsequent accidents. No one was seriously injured in connection with the accidents, which the police suspect is due to the weather.

– We think it must almost be because of the weather, because there was a violent storm over the area at the time, she says.

Several train routes are also affected by delays due to thunderstorms and lightning strikes, writes P4 Trafik on X.

This applies, among other things, to the Nordvestbanen between Kalundborg and Holbæk, the Gribskovbanen between Hillerød and Tisvildeleje.

– Scattered cancellations may occur, writes P4 Trafik.

However, meteorologist Trine Pedersen sees light at the end of the tunnel. She points out that it is expected that there will be good days ahead, when there will be more calm in the rain showers.

But the large amounts of rain, thunder and lightning are normal for this time between late summer and early autumn.
