The so-called Nobel week will begin this morning in Stockholm with the announcement of the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine.

During it, laureates in a total of six categories will be announced. Probably the most watched Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday, and the last one will be the Nobel Prize for Economics in a week on Monday.

According to the data analysis company Clarivate, Jonathan Cohen and Helen Hobbs have a good chance of winning the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their research into the genetics of lipid metabolism, which enabled the development of new drugs for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, or Ann Graybielová, Okihide Hikosaka and Wolfram Schultz for their physiological studies of the basal ganglia , which are key to motor control and behavior, including learning. According to the company, the duo Davor Solter and Azim Surani are also in the game for the discovery of genomic imprinting, which improved the understanding of epigenetics and mammalian development.

Last year, Hungarian Katalin Karikóová and American Drew Weissman won the prestigious award, which comes with a reward of 11 million Swedish crowns (24.5 million CZK), who laid the foundations for the development of mRNA vaccines against the covid-19 disease.

The Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine has been awarded 114 times so far this year, and 227 experts have won it.
