A view we no longer have. Sea view in Tallinn’s environmental value area, Pirita. During 14 months (July 2023 – September 2024), I documented how, despite the opposition of local residents, luxury apartment buildings are being built between the promenade and Pirita road, thus obscuring the wide view of the sea. Until January 2024, I was able to take pictures from exactly the same point in the green area where I took the first photo, but soon fences were erected around the future construction site. Excavators and cranes arrived. I retreated a few tens of meters, trying to maintain as similar a course as possible. During the year, the construction zone was further expanded and I also retreated with my camera. As time went on, the farther I could take pictures and the uglier the view became. By September 2024, the walls rose to 2-3 stories and the view of the sea disappeared. “The number of seats in the front row is always limited,” the developer Liven AS advertises the sea-view apartments there, the prices of the larger ones reach over one million euros.
Over the iridescent water. Marine fuel leaked from a small boat in the Pirita marina. The pollution spread upstream along the Pirita River under the influence of the wind.
