The number of plastic bags consumed in the European Union decreased by 14 percent, or by 4.7 billion, announced the European statistics service Eurostat.
According to data for 2022, an average of 66.6 lightweight plastic carrier bags were consumed per person in the EU, which is 10.8 bags less than in 2021.
A total of 29.8 billion bags were used, 4.7 billion less than a year earlier.
On average, Belgians used only four plastic bags per person, Poles seven, and Portuguese 13.
Among the EU member states for which data are available, Lithuania consumes the most plastic bags, 249 per person, followed by Latvia (183) and the Czech Republic (185).
All EU countries are implementing measures to reduce the use of plastic bags, in accordance with the Plastic Bag Directive, whose goal is to limit their consumption to 40 bags per person per year by December 31, 2025.
