The numbers are not good in June

The road safety figures for June are out, and they’re not great. We’ll explain everything!

Road Safety regularly reminds us that driving is absolutely not a trivial act, quite the contrary.

Road deaths on the rise

Indeed, an accident can unfortunately happen very quickly, and on the road, it is generally unforgiving. Thus, the road mortality figures are still very high, as confirmed by the data for last June, which have just been revealed by the interministerial body. And unfortunately, they are not very encouraging. Indeed, there are no fewer than 145 deaths on the motorists’ side, which represents a significant increase of 26 victims compared to the same period in 2023. But that’s not all, because pedestrians are not left out, with an equally worrying situation for them. And for good reason, in June 2024, 33 of them lost their lives on the roads, 5 more than in June 2023. These statistics are part of an overall context of increasing road mortality, with a total of 291 deaths in June 2024 compared to 286 the previous year, marking an increase of 2%, all categories of road users combined.

Road safety raises the alarm

However, amidst this bad news, one bright spot can be noted. The number of seriously injured has decreased considerably. Indeed, and according to data from the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR), 1,519 people were seriously injured in June 2024, a decrease of 12% compared to June 2023. Another positive note concerns the decrease in mortality among users of motorized two-wheelers. This trend is also observed among cyclists and young people under 18. However, despite these specific decreases, overall mortality is up 5% over the last 12 months, and that of users of motorized two-wheelers has increased by 6%. Suffice to say that we must therefore not relax our efforts on the road. Especially since the risks are particularly high during the holiday period, and especially during major cross-country trips. This is confirmed by Florence Guillaume, Interministerial Delegate for Road Safety.

So be very careful on the roads this summer!
