Tomiko Itooka, a Japanese woman who was the oldest person in the world, according to Guinness World Records, has died at the age of 116, reports The Guardian.
Yoshitsugu Nagata, an official in charge of policies for the elderly, said Itooka died on December 29 at a nursing home in Ashiya, central Japan.
Itooka, who liked bananas and a Japanese yogurt-flavored drink called Calpis, was born on May 23, 1908. She became the oldest person alive last year after the death of 117-year-old Maria Branyas, according to Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

When told she topped the world supercentenarian list, she simply replied, “Thank you.”
Itooka received flowers, a cake and a card from the mayor when she celebrated her birthday last year. The woman married in her 20s and had two daughters and two sons, according to Guinness.
The world’s oldest person is now Inah Canabarro Lucas, a Brazilian nun who was born 16 days after 116-year-old Itooka, according to GRG.
