Several athletes have complained, since arriving at the Olympic village in Paris, of the poor accommodation and meal conditions. One of the most vocal was the Italian Thomas Ceccon, gold medalist in the 100 meters backstroke. He erupted after missing out on qualifying for the 200m backstroke final.

“There is no air conditioning in the Olympic village, it is hot and the food is bad. Many athletes are unhappy for this reason. It’s not an alibi or an excuse, but the reality of what maybe not everyone knows.

I’m disappointed I didn’t make the final, but I was too tired. It’s hard to sleep both at night and in the afternoon. When I’m at home, I always sleep in the afternoon, but here I’m fighting between the noise and the heat”, said the athlete, according to The Sun.

Soon after, images emerged of him sleeping on the ground next to a bench in a park. He spread a white towel on the grass and took a nap. The video was made by the Saudi rower Husein Alireza.

Bernadette Szocs does not have air conditioning in her room

Including Bernadette Szocs complained about the existing conditions in the Olympic village. She stated for The Guardian that there is no air conditioning in the rooms. She and her roommate have a fan, which is not enough.

“Somehow we were lucky that it wasn’t that hot outside so we didn’t need it that much, but now it’s hot and you feel like it’s too hot in the room too. The fan is not strong enough. When it’s pointed at you it’s fine, but after it turns around you don’t feel it. We sleep with the door open at night. The rooms are small and we are two people”, the athlete said.

The British called in private chefs as an emergency measure

For her part, the American tennis player Coco Gauff revealed that one of her teammates left the Olympic village after finding that the beds, made from recyclable cardboardThese are too small.

Organizers thought the design of the 2,807 “self-cooling” apartments would make air conditioning redundant, but they were proven wrong.

Andy Anson, the head of the British Olympic forum, admitted that private chefs had to be called in as an emergency measure. “Certain foods are not enough: eggs, chicken, certain carbohydrates, and then there’s the quality of the food, with athletes being served raw meat,” he detailed.
