While the fatal accidents in Kazakhstan and South Korea remain on the agenda, the penalties to be imposed by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation have been announced in the Official Gazette. Accordingly, the penalty for shining a laser at a plane was 131 thousand liras. Experts stated that shining a laser at the plane during landing could lead to fatal accidents, and also explained how these people were caught.
in the new year punishment While the and fee amounts were updated, the penalties applied to civil aviation were also increased. According to the regulation on administrative fines to be imposed by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation in 2025, published in the Official Gazette, the fine to be imposed on those who point lasers at aircraft in a way that may risk flight safety, interfere with aircraft communications and similar violations will be 131 thousand 176 liras.
Incidents of lasers being shined on planes have also been a frequent occurrence in recent years. Lasers shined on planes from around airports, especially when planes are landing and taking off, pose a danger to flight safety. The recent plane crashes in Kazakhstan and South Korea have once again brought up such flight safety issues.
IT MAY CAUSE FATAL ACCIDENTS
Retired captain pilot Mehmet Vasıf Gebeş states that shining a laser on the plane is a very dangerous situation, especially during the landing of the plane, and states that this can cause an accident. Stating that the plane was removed from the autopilot during the landing and the landing was carried out by the pilot, the retired pilot states that the laser beam will block the view and have serious consequences. The retired pilot continues his words as follows:
The number one problem caused by shining a laser on the plane is that it blocks the pilots’ vision. This often causes trouble on landing. It does not cause any problems during takeoff or cruising. Since the plane is usually lowered manually by the pilots during landing, it is important that the pilots’ view is not interrupted. If the pilot’s vision is interrupted by shining a laser at him, it may cause very serious accidents. It is worth remembering that plane crashes usually occur during takeoff and landing.
MAY CAUSE TEMPORARY BLINDNESS
Retired pilot and accident prevention expert Eyüp Turşucu emphasizes that although there has been no plane crash due to laser light to date, it is seriously considered as a risk factor and precautions are being taken. Turşucu continues his words as follows:
The laser light coming from the ground to the pilot’s eyes does not cause much trouble at cruising altitude; Even in the case of temporary flash blindness, there is sufficient time for vision to recover. However, during the phases of night flights close to the ground such as take-off, descent, approach and landing, laser lights shined from simple hand tools can be dangerous in terms of flight safety. The situation can become very dangerous with the pilot experiencing temporary blindness on final approach. The eye is more sensitive to any bright light in the dark of night and in the dimly lit environment of the cockpit.
THEY WERE CAUGHT DUE TO THE PILOT’S COMPLAINT
Retired pilot Mehmet Vasıf Gebeş states that people holding lasers cannot be seen by the pilot, but the direction from which the laser is coming is reported by the pilots. He emphasizes that security forces searched the location shown by the pilot and detected people holding lasers. Retired pilot Eyüp Turşucu explains the situation as follows:
Pilots report the coordinates of the location where they encountered the laser attack to the air traffic unit, who in turn notify the law enforcement forces to help identify the attackers.
Last year, the laser harassment carried out on a passenger plane flying from Istanbul to Izmir was recorded on the passengers’ cameras. The person who pointed a laser at a Delta Airlines passenger plane in the USA was also caught by security forces and sent to prison.
2025 PENALTY HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED
According to the regulation regarding administrative fines to be imposed by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation in 2025, other penalties have also increased. According to the decision aeroplane Passengers who use smoke-emitting devices and smoke inside will be fined 19 thousand 668 liras.
If you resist being scanned or manually searched despite being warned at security checkpoints at airports, or if you prevent security personnel from doing their job, a fine of 26 thousand 226 TL will be imposed. An administrative fine of 19 thousand 668 liras will be imposed on unruly passengers who act violently on the plane, argue with the cabin crew and passengers, and prevent the flight crew from performing their duties by using force.
