The Opel Grandland Electric is a large compact SUV that is 5,000 euros cheaper than a Peugeot E-3008

Lagging behind its rivals in the European market, the Opel Grandland has undergone a major change for its second generation, hoping to carve out a slightly stronger niche in the hyper-competitive compact SUV segment.

Available in an electric version with a single power level of 213 HP, it gives the option to choose between two batteries of different capacities, with a starting price of 40,850 euros.

Opel Grandland: a compact SUV that is not very compact

The new Opel Grandland is considerably less compact than its predecessor, growing by 17 cm to the 4.65 m in length. In terms of design, it clearly moves away from the model we already know, with a style that is both more massive and more elegant. The new Vizor 3D translucent grill stands out, which incorporates the horizontal lighting signature and the illuminated logo.

Being one of the largest models in its category, this new Grandland could have benefited from a second row of rear seats, like its cousin the Peugeot 5008 with which it shares the platform. But it is not like that.

Opel justifies this choice by the fact that the new, smaller Opel Frontera will have a 7-seater version, while the Combo Life and the Zafira Life also offer this option. In exchange, it offers a 550-liter trunk.

The first Opel model to adopt the STLA Medium platform, which it shares with the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, the Opel Grandland offers a wide range of engines and technology, from mild hybrid to electric to a PHEV.

On an electrical level, Opel proposes two electric versions, both with 157 kW (213 HP), with the battery capacity being what differentiates them. The first has a 73 kWh battery and approves an average autonomy of 523 km and a consumption 16.9 kWh/100 kmwhich gives us a average autonomy of 413 km.

The second version has a new 82 kWh batterymanufactured in France by ACC (a joint venture of Stellantis, Total Energies and Mercedes). It allows an autonomy of 585 km to be approved. Although with an approved average consumption of 17.8 kWh/100 km the real average autonomy would be closer to the 460 km. This battery is only available with the highest trim, the GS.

Inside this second generation of the Grandland, the renovation is at least as significant as on the outside. The German SUV seems to have taken a big leap towards modernity. Organized in the same way as its cousin the Peugeot 3008, the driving position seems to envelop the driver with its high central tunnel. The dashboard, for its part, has been refined. The digital instrumentation is more horizontal and more modest in size (10 inches).

Following the current trend, most functions unfortunately require using the touch screen central, such as to deactivate the lane assist or the speeding warning system, for example. Fortunately, Opel has kept three physical controls below the screen for easy climate control adjustment. The large 16-inch central screen is standard on the GS trim, the highest in the range.
