Apple announced the iPhone 16 series last month, and one of the standout features is the Camera Control shutter button. Now, OPPO has confirmed that its upcoming Find X8 series will support a similar camera button.
Find series product manager at OPPO, Zhou Yibao, confirmed on Weibo that the Find X8 series supports a pressure-sensitive camera shutter button, posting a video to show it in action. The executive said you can double-tap the button to quickly launch the camera app and that the pressure-sensitive nature means you don’t have to press down hard on the button to take photos.
What else can you do with this camera button?
Apple’s button also supports swipe-based gestures to control camera zoom and other functions, and it turns out that OPPO’s button also supports swipe-to-zoom. Interestingly, OPPO’s video shows that all camera button functions on the Find X8 models work underwater, including the panning function.
Zhou also explained the reasons why OPPO included the camera shutter button in the foreground. The CEO pointed to the aforementioned underwater use case, explaining that you can’t use a phone’s screen underwater. So this camera button will allow you to easily take photos underwater and control the zoom.
He also acknowledged that almost every smartphone allows you to take photos using the volume buttons, but claimed that “more than 95% of people” don’t know about this option. However, I am not sure about that figure. He added that the volume button does not support taking photos and zooming at the same time, forcing you to choose between the two functions.
Either way, we expect the OPPO Find X8 Pro, in particular, to be a strong contender for the best camera phone when it launches later this month. The phone is expected to offer a quad rear camera system, with four 50MP cameras. Similar to the Find X7 Ultra, the X8 Pro should have a 50MP camera with 3x zoom and a 50MP periscope lens with 6x zoom. The Find X8 series is also expected to launch in global markets in 2025, so we can’t wait to get our hands on these devices and try out that camera button.
