Prague – In Prague today, the organizers will announce the nominations for the annual awards of the Czech Film and Television Academy (ČFTA) Czech Lion. In the 32nd year, 93 films and TV works premiered in 2024 will compete for prizes. Their list can be found on the ČFTA website. The organizers will present the prizes on March 8 in Prague’s Rudolfinum. At today’s announcement, the non-statutory Movie Fan Award and the award for Best Movie Poster will be awarded.
The organizers have made several changes to the awarded categories for this year’s awards. TV mini-series and series are newly merged into one category, and TV movies are judged under feature-length feature film. At the same time, the acting categories were expanded, and acting performances in series and mini-series, both in the main and supporting roles, are now separately assessed.
As of December 1, academics from last year’s film production assessed 41 feature films, 16 documentary films selected by a pre-selection committee made up of academy members, ten animated or puppet films and ten short films. The academics also evaluated 16 submitted series and miniseries that were shown on TV screens or online platforms last year.
Every year, the presidium of the ČFTA awards an extraordinary contribution to Czech cinematography and can also award a prize for an extraordinary achievement in the field of audio-visual.
Last year, the Czech Lion for the best feature film of 2023 was won by the film Brothers by director Tomáš Mašín. His film depicts the history of the resistance group of the Mašín brothers and their escape to West Berlin. The TV retro series Volha and the science fiction film with a criminal plot, Bod obnovy, received the most awards, winning five awards each.
The award for the best performance in a leading role went to Kryštof Hádek for his portrayal of Standa Pekárka in the series Volha. The award for the best female performance in a leading role went to Simona Peková for her portrayal of Valerie in the horror-themed comedy Príšla v noci.
