By law, owners are required to obtain a classification certificate for them, but only a small number comply with this legal requirement.

Tourism specialists say that throughout the country there are thousands of apartments operating illegally, they report stirileprotv.ro.

ANAF inspectors checked, from the beginning of the year until now, 436 individuals who rented their homes for tourist purposes, but did not declare the income. In these situations, the Tax Office identified illegal receipts exceeding 92 million lei. However, there is no information about the exact amount of cash received from tourists.

According to official information, the number of apartments and rooms rented as hotels, both by individuals and legal entities, exceeds 14,000 classified tourist units. However, it is estimated that several thousand other units are not declared, most of them being located on the coast and in big cities, according to specialists in the field.

In the first nine months of the year, almost 1.3 million Romanian and foreign tourists stayed in apartments rented as hotels, according to the INS.

The number of people holidaying in such accommodation, which often offers the comfort of a home of their own, has increased by around 230,000 compared to the same period last year.

In Romania, the most popular holiday destinations include the capital, mountain resorts, areas with tourist routes and seaside resorts.
