The Pemci 1 heating plant in Kladovo, with the support of the American Agency for International Development (USAID) of the “Better Energy” program in Serbia, installed a 50 kilowatt solar power plant and became the first buyer-producer (posjumer) among the heating plants.
Minister Dubravka Đedović Handanović said that in the last year and a half, the capacity of the prosumer in Serbia has increased ten times from six megawatts (MW) to more than 65 MW.
“This is the first customer-producer heating plant in Serbia that combines two renewable energy sources – biomass and solar energy. Thank you for the donation to USAID, thanks to which a solar power plant was installed, which the heating plant will use to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. About 2,500 households will be heated with clean energy, which will also increase energy security,” said Đedović Handanović.
She added that she expects USAID through the “Better Energy” project to support a software solution for efficient management of energy consumption in that heating plant, which will further reduce costs.
According to her, the state has created a favorable regulatory framework for the development of capacities from renewable energy sources (RES), and the installed capacities of solar power plants have increased many times over.
“Two years ago we had about 20 MW of solar power plant capacity, and by the end of 2024 we will have about 150 MW. We have created the conditions, first of all legislative ones, for the natural potentials that Serbia is rich in, such as the sun and wind, to rapidly begin to be transformed into new production capacities and to increase investments in RES. We continue cooperation with the USA in the development of renewable energy projects through solar and other forms of clean energy,” the minister said.
