Cult Taproom hosts on September 6 and 7 some of the most spectacular live acts from the Romanian underground, and on September 15 at the Bastionul Țesătorilor there is a national premiere: a concert by the tulnicaresses from the Avram Iancu commune.
Platform MELODY and the publication The Attic organizes in Brașov in the first half of September a series of concerts and activities with the public whose core is unconventional musical practices and the dialogue between local traditions and international trends, synthetic and organic, archaic and contemporary.
Cult Taprooma gorgeous terrace in the center of the city, will host on September 6 and 7 name like
deathbycoconut (krautrock), Sofia Zadar (pop experimental), #FLUID (electronic music), Suce Fraga (trap, r&b), Plevna (a unique palette of multicultural influences), Esosu (hip-hop) and Ana Secheres (DJ and radio producer).
Although they cross a multitude of musical styles, the artists who will perform at Cult Taproom have in common the intuition for futuristic sounds that make the body dance and advertise themselves from marginal areas of contemporary culture, coagulated around the experimental spirit and DIY (abbreviation of the phrase do it yourselfthat is do it yourself). Also, on the same weekend, also at Cult Taproom, there will be a music composition and production workshop supported by the musician Esosu.
Tulnicaresele from Avram Iancu commune, national premiere concerts
Next weekend – on the day of Sunday, September 15 – six tulnic performers from Avram Iancu commune (Alba county) will reunite with the Belgian musician Milan Warmoeskerken in the unique setting of Bastion of the Weaversfor an absolute premiere on a local stage: a concert by the group Milan W & The Tulnic Ensemble of Avram Iancu.
Historically, the tulnicul began as a communication tool, being used for calling the army to battle, calling the bell, signaling shepherds, etc., and its musical valences appeared starting in the 19th century, being recorded extremely rarely and at the same time one of the few wind instruments for which there are almost no compositions.
Incidentally, one of the few such creations – a composition for tulnic in a modern, electroacoustic key – was made by the aforementioned Belgian artist for the EUROPALIA festival in 2019, deconstructing the natural sound of the instrument and recomposing it in real time with the help of the synthesizer . The concert at the Weavers’ Bastion will be followed by a discussion with the artists moderated by the DJ and the curator Russian Dragos (The Attic).

Who are the guest artists?
The Tulnic Ensemble of Avram Iancu it includes Maria Coroiu, Lenuța Fiț, Titiana Drăgoi, Eugenia Gavră, Mihaela Lazăr and Ramona Pogan. They are part of a community of women and girls from the Apuseni Mountains who play the tulnic, a wooden aerophone instrument, up to three meters long, handcrafted from spruce. Its sonic resonance is influenced by how dry or wet the wood is, so the performers from the Avram Iancu commune wet it in the river, looking for the optimal level of moisture to emit the strongest sounds.
Milan Warmoeskerken is a producer from Antwerp who has released several albums on labels such as Jj funhouse, BAKK and Ekster. He has been making electronic music since he came into contact with it and studied jazz guitar as a child. In addition to his solo project, Milan has been active in various bands in Belgium. His new solo album, Leave Another Daywill be released in October 2024 on the Stroom label.
deathbycoconut is a band made up of five musicians from Bucharest, active both solo and in other group projects: Suce Fraga (vocals, bass, keyboards), Nitchji Oh (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Domnul Valentin (drums), Horațiu Șerbănescu/ Plevna (keyboards, guitar, bass) and Alex Bălă (keyboards). They mix krautrock, electronica, post punk and a palette of non-western influences into a sound universe that is impossible to frame and irresistible as a live experience.
Sofia Zadar is a musician and performer. In his experimental pop compositions he explores emancipatory futures and subversive fusions between organic textures and electronic sonic structures. The stories he constructs function as anchors in a dystopian present and as fragments of an already emerging utopia.
#FLUID (born 2016) – a Bucharest queer act – is the collaboration between Paula Dunker (performer, actress, choreographer, poet, playwright), Alex Bălă (musician) and other crooked creatures. Using sound, music and the microphone as emotional tools, #FLUID is the mother of the techno-faggothique neo-genre.
Fraga she is a self-taught musician and producer who easily crosses different genres of electronica, trap, hip-hop, r&b and no-step groove. Her voice coagulates all these influences, ultimately rendering a very personal, yet unusually coherent universe.
Plevnaalso known as Horațiu Șerbănescu, is a musician who skilfully combines the delicate nostalgia of the eighties with contemporary local oriental music, exploring an innovative balance that resonates with a diverse audience. With a rhythmic infusion of the 9/8 groove, his creations outline a meticulously constructed sonic multiverse.
Esosu he’s a musician and vocalist from Bucharest who grew up with a varied musical diet. His creations echoes of early house, electro and disco music reinterpreted on a new school rap base with lyrics that maintain a warm, positive vibe, communicating parts of his inner world and emotions condensed into sometimes funny, sometimes cryptic formulations.
Ana Secheres he has been a selector on the Bucharest stage for several years now and occasionally on the international stage. She performs regularly in local clubs and the rest of the time she keeps busy by organizing live shows or hosting the Avoidance of Séance party series and the monthly show of the same name for Black Rhino Radio. She has done cultural journalism, photography, live streams and is still interested in everything that can be called undeground.
